Yet-Unnamed Impulsor

As usual the quality of this model draws on tutorials from Legalized Mischief. In this case, the panel modulation greyscale of the Repulsor was essential in setting the tones on the slightly smaller tank that has a lot of design commonality. 

 Updating the paint recipe since both my luck with GW air paints has been less than stellar, and the line is apparently going away anyway.

Copper Muzzle Burn

 

The normal progression of blue/violet/sepia washes doesn't work on the copper colored barrels I used for my Melta Rifles. Contrast to the rescue!

Over Scale75 Old Copper, two coats each of Aggaros Dunes (fully cover mid notch), Gore Grunta Fur (cover front notch only), and Wyldwood (sloppy edge highlight the front of the barrel). Use slightly thinned paint and blend aggressively.

VMC steels

 Metallics are very hard to differentiate unless you put them side by side, so I did.

I'm not going to bother trying to illustrate the differences in photos since metallics are impossible to photograph. In the interests of using these paints better in the future for myself, I have some notes and impressions from examining them more closely.

• Steel: Machined and unpainted steel, like it just rolled off the assembly line. This will show any wash or filter you put over it to weather - it is, as the tin suggests, a neutral steel color.
• Jet Exhaust: The above, but with a thin coat of Nuln Oil or similar black wash pre-applied. As the name would suggest this will give a more "used" feel to the metal. This is probably where you start and drybrush up to build layers for any oil-based engine or machinery.
• Gunmetal: Bright and polished steel. This is a great soft highlight color for any of the rest of the set without going all the way to a silver or aluminum. It's likely not a good basecoat color since you'd have to use an extremely bright highlight.
• Exhaust Manifold: A very faint coat of Agrax or similar brown wash over Steel that comes out just slightly less reflective and a little grimy. It's pretty hard to tell this apart from Steel other than the lower reflectivity, and even Jet Exhaust isn't much different - this is just brown-ish instead of black-ish. Of the five this is the "dirtiest" color due to the inclusion of a bit of brown, and is probably best for ruined or heavily weathered steel.
• Burnt Iron: A slightly less reflective Steel that still feels neutral, and a very close match for Leadbelcher. The brightness is about the same on a flat panel but not as pronounced on curved surfaces. You can probably get some subtle shading with this as a basecoat and a zenethil of Steel, but I'd be surprised if that's something that is perceptible on an infantry model unless you're a god tier expert in which case you're probably doing NMM anyway.

For the Granite Fists, Burnt Iron is going to continue to be the staple basecoat color and I'll rotate Gunmetal in as a highlight. I think Steel is mostly going to be for small accessories, but I may start to try it out on larger pieces like assault cannons so that the weathering can be more pronounced.

In this image, the butt end of the gun has been painted with Burnt Iron in all cases and the tips remain the same as above. The order is now correctly ascending. There is a difference that's perceptible for all four mismatches, but it's hard to imagine the washes I use not obliterating almost all of the difference other than Gunmetal.

Giant Forbidden Cookie

 The dreadnought base being worked up.

 

Step 1: A whole bunch of the Huge Miniatures "Stone" base. This texture is less runny than Mud, and won't shrink back from the edges quite so much. Skulls and rocks are put down at this phase to give a solid anchoring on the base, although it's difficult to angle the skulls effectively with this thin of a layer. Doing stones here is correct, but at least some skulls should come later or need a bit more material.

 

A layer of Mud, again from Huge, with some larger ballast sprinkled on for additional texture. I don't use as much ballast on smaller bases, but there's more visible surface area on this base and I wanted to make sure there was enough rugged surface for the drybrush to catch on.

 

One more Mud touch-up to make sure the edges of the base are thoroughly covered and the ballast is better balanced across the full base.

 

The base texturing for the Suppressors' magentized walls were also done at this stage, then primed with Stylinrez black.

 

I painted the walls first since some sections of wall are "under" the texture layer, and going back over them later would look weird. The bases were undercoated with Rhinox Hide. I tried out Tindalos Red on the barrel on a whim.

 

A drybrush of Doombull Brown put Tindalos squarely in between the two colors, which was a nice surprise if I want to work in some extra variation.

 

A drybrush of Baneblade Brown on the whole base, and some scatter inks for variation. The rocks were undercoated Baneblade a layer of various Contrast paints was applied. Also added metallic trim to the barrel, trying to keep the colors more subtle.

A final drybrush of Karak Stone to make the whole scene feel cohesively dusty. I ended up washing the barrel to be a bit more red with Carroburg Crimson, which caused it to be an imprcise match to the other reds on the base. Both feet were pinned, and the victory lap of Necro Black from Scale 75 around the rim finished this big guy off.
